1 Wadding Threads
Stuffer threads used to give weight to a fabric or enhance the prominence of the design as in toilet fabrics, matelasses, etc. (See Wadded Cloths) -
2 Padding Threads
Same as wadding threads. -
3 Wadded Cloths
Fabrics in which an extra warp or weft is introduced to add weight and bulk. Warp wadding is most used because it is the most economical and is usually coarser and cheaper than the face or back warps. The wadding threads lie between the two fabrics and the binding intersections are limited to the minimum and placed so as not to be seen on either face or back. -

6 Marseilles Quilts
A compound fabric consisting of two plain cloths joined together by a figuring warp to produce a pattern. Between the two cloths is inserted wadding weft of coarse yarn. A jacquard machine and heald shafts are required to weave the cloth. The healds weave the plain cloth, while the patterning ends are operated by the jacquard. Each pattern card serves for ten picks, viz., four picks of fine weft for the face cloth, four from the same shuttle for the back cloth, and two picks of coarse weft for wadding. The cloth can be woven from one beam, but two beams allow the tension on the stitching threads to be more correctly adjusted. The various qualities are termed 4-pick, 5-pick, etc., according to the number of picks woven for each jacquard card. One cloth is made 72 face ends 1/100's, 24 back ends, 20's, 40 face picks 32's, 40 back picks 32's, and 20 wadding picks 16's per inch, all cotton yarns. This cloth is an imitation of an Eastern fabric used as quilts, and made from a pure plain woven cloth, two pieces of the cloth being placed together one on the top of the other, and a thick cotton wadding placed between, the whole being stitched together by hand. Where no stitches were used the cloth bulged owing to the wadding between. -
7 Bedford Cords
Fabrics having cords or ribs in the direction of the warp produced by interweaving the weft in plain or twill order with alternate groups of warp threads. The ribs may be emphasised by the addition of wadding or stuffing warp threads. Generally woven in dobby looms. All cotton, all wool or mixed. A standard cotton cloth is made 36-in., 144 X 100 per inch, 40's/50's, with 20's wadding ends. The diagram gives the weave. When the face ends X are weaving plain in one section, the face ends are lifted in the other section, this is for two picks, and then the weave is reversed. The plain ends are separated in the reed.▪ Another cloth is made 30-in. from 24's warp, 36's weft, with every seventh cord made from coloured yarn. A heavy cloth is made for use as riding breeches in many qualities. Also made with wool yams. The illustration (A) shows a fancy Bedford cord for dress goods. There are ten padding cords to the inch, as shown by the broader cord stripes. These dress goods styles are made from a two-fold warp and single weft, all Egyptian yams. Fabric B is a three-colour fancy weave. The term " London Cord " is given to a heavy cotton Bedford Cord, woven with a 2 X 1 twill face. One quality is 88 X 80 per inch, 16/20's. Frequently padding ends are used to give prominence to the cords. Bedford Cord shirtings are made from the 144 X 110 cloth, usually 33/34-in. and with coloured stripes

8 Toilet Cloths
TOILET CLOTHS, TOILETINGSTerms applied to a number of fabrics such as bed quilts or counterpanes, dressing-table covers, and connote a distinctive type of fabric, the chief feature of which is a face cloth in the plain weave, stitched down according to a prearranged design by means of a tightly-woven binding warp. This causes the figure to stand out in relief, and this feature is enhanced when wadding weft is used. Many qualities are made, including loose-backs, e.g., those in which the tight figuring threads float at the back when not forming figure; half-fast backs in which the figuring threads are partly bound by interlacing with some back picks; and fast backs, in which there is a back pick for every card so that the figuring ends are well bound at the back, usually in the plain weave. The cloths are known as 2-pick, 3-pick, 4-pick, 5-pick and 6-pick toilets according to the number of picks inserted at each figuring shed. -

11 London Cord
A satin-faced Bedford cord fabric on six picks as the weave shown. This brings the face threads to the top giving better wear and appearance; \'s show cutting ends, plain weave, full squares are face ends, and /'s show the wadding ends (see Bedford Cords). -
12 Quilts, Toilet
QUILTS, TOILETA non-reversible fabric of the pique type in which a fine face cloth is woven by healds, and is figured by a tightly woven warp actuated by a jacquard. The usual arrangement is one binding warp to two face ends. The fabrics may be (1) " loose backs " in which the binding warp threads float on the back of the cloth when not forming figure; (2) half-fast; and (3) fast backs. In half-fast and fast backs the binding warp interweaves more or less firmly with an additional weft. In the better qualities, a third weft may be introduced as wadding. Toilets are usually woven grey and bleached in the piece.
